Cybersecurity Panel Discussion

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 33% growth in cybersecurity professionals within the next decade; an amount this it classifies as “much greater than average”. Without question, cybersecurity is a vital area for large and small organizations. According to the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in 2021 a ransomware attack occured every 11 seconds and 43% of cyber attacks target small businesses. The worldwide cost of cybercrime is estimated at $10.5 trillion annually by 2025. Cybersecurity incidents can result in financial loss, loss of productivity, damage to reputation, legal liability, and business continuity issues.

Information security breaches may come from several sources including Phishing emails, Malware, and Hacking.  However, a significant vulnerability comes from a business’s own employees. Employees may purposely steal information or simply be careless through the use of insecure mobile devices and the use of unapproved cloud applications in the workplace. Vulnerability might also extend to business suppliers and customers.

For these reasons, cybersecurity professionals need a variety of skills including highly technical computing skills, business skills, and knowledge of human behaviors. Company security policy must encompass technology, business processes, and business policy.
This session will overview cybersecurity, the profession, and educational pathways to enter the profession. Please attend the distinguished group of panelists on Saturday, March 5 from 10-11:00 AM.

Our panelists from business and education include experts in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and its application in app development and decision-making systems. The panel will overview AI/ML technologies and discuss the process, techniques, and technology used to create apps. The panel will also discuss how our institutions are keeping pace with AI, discuss career opportunities and the skills needed to enter the field.

The virtual panel consists of local educators and industry professionals. You have an opportunity to listen and ask questions.

The following individuals will take part in the panel discussion.

Dirk Baldwin – retired Dean of the College of Business, Economics, and Computing at UW-Parkside. Dr. Baldwin has a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems with a minor in Computer Science. He has extensive consulting experience and chaired the Information Technology Practice Center in SE Wisconsin. Dr. Baldwin will be moderating the panel.

Dan Kirner – Managing Director of Information Technology at Accenture. He has served in various global roles including Operating Model Changes, IT Operations, IT Risk Management including cyber security lead, SAP strategy, Release Management, and Finance Capability.  Prior to working in Accenture’s Internal IT area he was a managing director in Accenture’s SAP and Chemical practice. Dan holds a bachelor of science degree in finance and a master of science degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin. He lives with his family near Racine, WI.

Dr Susan Lincke has 17 years of industry experience in telecommunications software, before embarking on a teaching career. She is certified as an Information Systems Auditor (ISACA CISA) and in Risk and Security Controls (CRISC). She is the author of Security Planning: An Applied Approach. She earned an NSF grant related to cybersecurity education, and implemented the cybersecurity certificate and concentration at UW-Parkside.

Danny Hetzel – a Cyber Security Analyst at Ascendium Education Group. In this role, he designs and implements security alert responses and manages the security infrastructure within the larger network at AEG. Danny is a recent computer science graduate at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Danny worked in the UW-Parkside App Factory, lectured at Northwestern University, and has presented research on cybersecurity at an academic IEEE security conference.
